Theatre

From 1993 until 2000, Dominique Caillat wrote and directed six plays for her youth company “Theater in der Vorburg“, which soon acquired a high reputation in and out of the Rhineland, most of all with her play about the Terezin ghetto/camp, Leb wohl, Schmetterling. She also wrote a highly praised Prologue, Scene and Epilogue to Hans Krása's Brundibár for the Viennese Chamber Opera and directed the Threepenny Opera by Brecht/Weill for the Rhineland Youth Theatre Festival.

Since 2000, the author has worked for the professional stage. In 2003, Niemandsland, about youth violence, had a sold out run in Koblenz. Her 2004 play about the Middle-East conflict, Kidnapping, opened at the State Theatre of Mainz and toured to great acclaim in over 20 German cities. In 2007, she used the themes of Kidnapping in a new play written in French, État de piège, which had a sold-out run at the Théâtre de Carouge in Geneva. In 2008, she was commissioned a play by the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences for Charles Darwin’s bicentennial anniversary: Darwin’s Confession had two parallel world premieres in French and in German in November 2009, and the productions went on a Swiss national tour (with over 40 performances in 10 cities). That same year, her libretto concept for a stag oratorio, The Children Crusade, received an award from the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia. Beside her work for the stage, she conceivesTheatrical Guided Tours for monuments in the Rhineland. She is presently working at various libretti for musical theatre and engaging in comprehensive research for a novel dealing with apes, humans, the Russian revolution, Abkhazia and biotechnology.
